What is the difference between high borosilicate glass and soda lime glass?
Sodium calcium glass accounts for 90% of the world's artificial glass, which is used for furniture, vases, beverage glass and windows. Soda lime glass is easy to be impacted and can't bear the drastic heat change. Its chemical composition is 69% silicon dioxide (silica), 15% soda powder (sodium oxide) and 9% lime (calcium oxide). This is the name of soda lime glass, which is only relatively durable at room temperature.
The coefficient of soda lime glass is more than twice that of high borosilicate glass, which means that it expands more than twice as fast when heated, and will crack quickly. Compared with ordinary soda lime glass, the proportion of silica in high borosilicate glass is much higher (80% than 69%), which makes it more difficult to crack.
In terms of temperature, the thermal shock range (tolerable temperature difference) of high borosilicate glass is 170 ° C, about 340 ° F. That's why you can remove the borosilicate glass from the oven and wash it with cold water without breaking it.
High borosilicate glass is resistant to chemical corrosion and can even be used to store nuclear waste. Boron in the glass reduces its solubility, thus preventing any unnecessary substances from infiltrating into the glass or vice versa; in terms of overall performance, high borosilicate glass is far superior to ordinary glass.
